[ The Problem ]

The Grid Is Vulnerable

As utilities increasingly rely on Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) to meet rising energy demand, the grid is becoming more decentralized and interconnected – extending networks far beyond conventional perimeters. This growing connectivity, while essential for load balancing and resilience, exposes millions of new endpoints to cyber threats.

Malicious actors, now equipped with advanced tools like AI, are exploiting these vulnerabilities at an accelerating pace, turning the evolving grid into a prime target for cyber attacks.

[ Our Solution ]

Decentralized, Zero-Trust Access Governance

Built on zero-trust and least privilege principles, our cybersecurity architecture enforces granular access controls on each device allowing communications between authorized devices to occur as needed. This dramatically reduces exposure to cyber threats and enhances access governance across the entire energy ecosystem. Our system ensures operational continuity, even during network partitions, by leveraging a proprietary distributed ledger technology that is embedded on each device.

What We Offer to Utilities

Security

Solitude Labs' software creates a secure perimeter around each resource which removes single points of failure. This means that as the grid scales and more devices are added, the network grows more resilient to attacks.

Visibility & Control

Our technology creates low latency, encrypted communication channels between devices, enabling utilities to have device-level telemetry and control.

Interoperability

Our software acts as a universal translator, converting various communication protocols into IEEE 2030.5. This enables seamless integration across vendors, allowing utilities to connect and manage diverse assets through a standardized interface.

DERs Increase The Attack Surface

  • Rapid DER Growth: U.S. distributed energy resource capacity will grow by 217 GW through 2028, equivalent to 70% of anticipated bulk generation capacity added during the same period, according to a report by Wood Mackenzie.
  • Limited Visibility: A Siemens survey found that utilities have visibility into only about one-third of DERs on their grids. This limited visibility hampers their ability to manage and optimize grid operations effectively.
  • Increasing Threats: Check Point Research documented 1,162 cyberattacks on utilities in 2024, a 70% increase compared to the prior year.
  • America Is a Target: A report by Trustwave SpiderLabs detailed a sharp rise in cyberattacks targeting the utilities sector, with ransomware incidents increasing by 80% since 2023. Notably, the U.S. accounts for 47% of all global cyberattacks in this sector.

Our Gateway Solution

Our hardware solution is a secure, plug-and-play gateway that utilities can connect – physically or wirelessly – to a wide array of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), such as EV chargers, solar inverters, batteries, water heaters, and more. Each device joins a decentralized, zero-trust mesh network powered by our proprietary software and custom policy.

This network-agnostic solution ensures interoperability across vendors and protocols. It employs the principle of least privilege — allowing only necessary communications, conditional access, or time-limited permissions — dramatically reducing attack vectors and improving access governance. Solitude Labs enables utility control and visibility through robust cybersecurity.

[ Benefits ]

Solitude Labs’ technology empowers utilities to harness DERs securely

Solitude Labs’ platform offers robust edge-level cyber security that protects each Distributed Energy Resource (DER) individually while maintaining the integrity of the entire network. The system is designed for seamless interoperability, supporting cross-manufacturer integration and compatibility with various communication protocols. This flexibility allows utilities to adopt a wide range of DER technologies without compromising on security. Additionally, our platform provides advanced monitoring and control capabilities, enabling utilities to stabilize the grid more effectively and detect threats in real-time. Built-in data analytics tools offer valuable insights for optimizing performance and enabling predictive maintenance across DER assets.

From an economic standpoint, Solitude Labs’ technology supports utilities in managing peak demand more efficiently, which helps to reduce the need for costly infrastructure investments. By maximizing the utilization of existing grid capacity, utilities can delay or avoid new capital expenditures. The platform also facilitates expanded participation in Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), allowing utilities to aggregate DER assets and unlock new revenue opportunities. Furthermore, the solution supports the transformation of energy consumers into active prosumers, enabling broader market participation and revenue-sharing models that benefit both utilities and end users.

Strategically, Solitude Labs accelerates the integration of DERs by providing secure and scalable solutions that enhance interoperability and resilience. The platform strengthens demand response capabilities, ensuring utilities can respond more effectively to extreme weather events and other grid stressors.  Looking ahead, the solution equips utilities with a future-ready infrastructure capable of withstanding increasingly sophisticated cyber threats and adapting to the dynamic demands of the modern energy landscape.
