[ about Solitude Labs]

The Next Generation
Of Energy Security

At Solitude Labs, we are committed to protecting America’s critical infrastructure from operational technology (OT) cyber threats. Our mission is to build a safer, smarter, and more resilient future for the nation by deploying advanced technologies and forging strategic partnerships. We proactively develop and implement robust security solutions that reinforce the foundation of essential systems, ensuring public safety and trust.

[ The Problem ]

Decentralized Power, Increased Threats

The rapid adoption of solar power and battery storage by homes and businesses has created a more interconnected yet vulnerable energy grid. Unlike traditional, large-scale power plants, these smaller Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) often lack adequate cybersecurity, making them susceptible to remote takeovers, data breaches, and potential grid-wide disruptions. Traditional network security measures are no longer sufficient. The future of energy demands device-level protection.

[ what drives us ]

Cybersecurity Threats

Cyberattacks targeting U.S. utilities have surged, with incidents rising from 689 in August 2023 to 1,162 in August 2024 – a 68% increase. This spike mirrors a broader trend in rising cyber threats to critical infrastructure, with attackers increasingly exploiting niche protocols and industrial control systems. Since 2020, OT-targeted attacks have increased by 87%.

The energy sector is also undergoing a transformation, as Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are poised to outpace bulk power in new capacity additions. In 2024, DERs accounted for 47% of new capacity, while bulk power comprised 54%. By 2028, DERs are expected to reach 53%, surpassing bulk power’s 46%. U.S. DER capacity is projected to grow from 239 GW in 2024 to 422 GW by 2028, a 106% increase.

[ Product Overview ]

Our hardware

Our hardware solution is a secure, plug-and-play black box device that utilities can connect – physically or wirelessly – to a wide array of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), such as electric vehicles, solar inverters, batteries, water heaters, and EV charging stations. Each device joins a decentralized, zero-trust mesh network powered by our proprietary software and custom policy.

This network-agnostic solution ensures interoperability across vendors and protocols. It employs the principle of least privilege, allowing only necessary communications, conditional access, and time-limited permissions – dramatically reducing attack vectors and improving access governance. Solitude Labs delivers a robust zero-trust access control solution,

[ Benefits ]

Solitude Labs’ technology empowers utilities to harness DERs securely

Solitude Labs’ platform offers robust edge-level cyber security that protects each Distributed Energy Resource (DER) individually while maintaining the integrity of the entire network. The system is designed for seamless interoperability, supporting cross-manufacturer integration and compatibility with various communication protocols. This flexibility allows utilities to adopt a wide range of DER technologies without compromising on security. Additionally, our platform provides advanced monitoring and control capabilities, enabling utilities to stabilize the grid more effectively and detect threats in real-time. Built-in data analytics tools offer valuable insights for optimizing performance and enabling predictive maintenance across DER assets.

From an economic standpoint, Solitude Labs’ technology supports utilities in managing peak demand more efficiently, which helps to reduce the need for costly infrastructure investments. By maximizing the utilization of existing grid capacity, utilities can delay or avoid new capital expenditures. The platform also facilitates expanded participation in Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), allowing utilities to aggregate DER assets and unlock new revenue opportunities. Furthermore, the solution supports the transformation of energy consumers into active prosumers, enabling broader market participation and revenue-sharing models that benefit both utilities and end users.

Strategically, Solitude Labs accelerates the integration of DERs by providing secure and scalable solutions that enhance interoperability and resilience. The platform strengthens demand response capabilities, ensuring utilities can respond more effectively to extreme weather events and other grid stressors. It also supports regulatory compliance, aligning with evolving standards such as FERC Order 2222. Looking ahead, the solution equips utilities with a future-ready infrastructure capable of withstanding increasingly sophisticated cyber threats and adapting to the dynamic demands of the modern energy landscape.
